Goal |
Disconnect the 12 volt battery so you can safely work on the car. This
is especially important for working with the airbag later on.
|
Step 1 |
Inside the car, write down all your AM and FM radio station presets.
They will all be lost when the battery is disconnected. |
|
|
Step 2 |
Unlock the car, open the front doors & trunk. Without power, you won't
be able to later! (We don't know this for certain...) |
Step 3 |
Inside the trunk, on the left side wall, remove carpeted cover
(three plastic pop-rivets): Push in the center pin of each plug
until you can easily remove the pop-rivets. Once their out, you
push the pin back through so it sticks out the front. Don't lose
'em.
Now is a good time to get a plastic container to put small parts
into.
|
|
|
Step 4 |
Remove the plastic protective shield by unscrewing the two 10mm
bolts. Don't unscrew the center one that only goes through the metal
battery hold-down bracket. |
|
|
Step 5 |
Note: As you can see, this and the next two steps involve removing the
positive cable from the battery. Several people have suggested that removing
the negative terminal is a bit safer: Since the car body is grounded,
if you were to accidentally touch your wrench to the car body while working
on the terminal, you could short the battery. We choose to work on the
positive terminal as it was more convenient, and we felt pretty safe with
how we did it.
Lift up the red plastic positive terminal cover. This won't lift
completely off, but it will lift off enough to get at the terminal. |
|
|
Step 6 |
Loosen nut on the positive terminal clamp (10mm again) |
Step 7 |
Remove cable from terminal. Set aside carefully so that it won't
accidentally come in contact with the battery terminal. |
|
|
Done |
Battery is now disconnected. |
