Goal |
Remove the steering wheel
|
Step 1 |
Lock the steering wheel in place by turning all the way to the right. |
Step 2 |
Disconnect the blue horn ground wire. Pull the wire
off the tab. It is located on the right of the frame in the interior
of the steering wheel. Be sure to grasp and pull the metal connector,
not the wire. |
|
|
Step 3 |
Remove the center nut with a 19mm socket. You'll need a socket extension
or a deep socket. |
Step 4 |
Mark the relative position of wheel on central post with paint or
white-out. Use a thin nail or the white-out brush to paint a small
thin line across the teeth in both the post and the socket. Later,
when you replace the wheel, this will help you get the alignment of
the wheel right the first time. |
|
|
Step 5 |
Assemble the steering wheel puller on the wheel. There are four
small steps here:
- Select puller bolts (8mm x 20 thread) that fit in the existing
puller holes in the steering wheel.
- Hand screw one bolt into the steering wheel. Screw down far
enough so that the bolt goes all the way through the steeling
wheel frame, but don't hit the bottom plate. You can get your
finger behind it to check that the bolt goes through.
- Holding the cross plate in place, hand screw in the other bolt.
Make sure the tops of the two bolts are even.
- Hand screw down the center bolt of the puller until it contacts
the top of the center post of the steering wheel.
- Check to make certain that the center bolt of the puller is
exactly in line with the center steering post. The cross plate
should be centered, and parallel to the steering wheel so it won't
slip. The two side bolts must be even so that they exert equal
force on the threads. Adjust the cross plate and side bolts as
needed.

|
Step 6 |
Using a wrench, slowly tighten down the center bolt of the puller
until the wheel pops off (and we do mean POP). It happens quicker
than you might expect! Let the yellow airbag cable and blue horn ground
wire drop out of the steering wheel. They will stay attached to the
car. |
